The Bandaged Shoulder

He said that he had hurt himself on a wall or that he had fallen.
But there was probably another reason
for the wounded and bandaged shoulder.

With a somewhat abrupt movement,
to bring down from a shelf some
photographs that he wanted to see closely,
the bandage was untied and a little blood ran.

I bandaged the shoulder again, and while bandaging it
I was somewhat slow; because it did not hurt,
and I liked to look at the blood. That
blood was a part of my love.

When he had left, I found in front of the chair,
a bloody rag, from the bandages,
a rag that looked in belonged in garbage;
which I brought up to my lips,
and which I held there for a long time --
the blood of love on my lips.

Aquella
sagre era parte de mi amor.

Cuando se marchó, hallé en la silla
un jirón de la venda, ensangrentado,
un jirón para echarlo a la basura sin más;
y que yo me llevé a los labios,
y que retuve por un buen rato –
sangre del amor en mis labios.

THE BANDAGED SHOULDER

He said he’d bumped into a wall or fallen.
Bur probably something else was the cause
of the injured and bandaged shoulder.

Because of a rather hasty movement,
in order to take down from a shelf
some photographs he wanted to see more closely
the bandage had come loose and a little blood had trickled.

I bandaged his shoulder again, and while doing so
I delayed somewhat; for he was in no pain,
and I like looking at the blood. An object
of my love was what that blood was.

When he’d gone I found beside the chair,
a bloodied rag, from the dressings,
clearly a rag straight for the garbage;
that I put against my lips,
and held there for some time-
the blood of love on my lips.
